What inspired you to go to law school?
Honestly, law school was never in my plans. I majored in Psychology and minored in Anthropology in college. I had planned on going to graduate school for psychology and even considered dental school on the advice of my sister. I ended up deciding on law school and I’m glad I did. I enjoyed my law school experience and I’m grateful to be in a profession where I can make a positive impact in my community and on people’s lives.
You went to law school in LA, but are you originally from the Central Valley?
Yes, I grew up in the rural and agricultural areas of the Central Valley. After I graduated from law school, I moved back home to study for the Bar, and I ended up working at Central California Legal Services (CCLS). I thought I would eventually move back to LA, but I met incredible people at CCLS, and I loved the work I was doing because we helped low income individuals in the Central Valley with various legal issues (housing, consumer, and immigration, etc). After working with CCLS for about 4 years, I went to work in the litigation unit at the Fresno County Counsel’s Office. I learned a great deal in the three and a half years I spent there and it really helped me grow as an attorney. Now I’m here at SJCL and I look forward to continuing to serve this community as a Staff Attorney for the New American Legal Clinic.
What made you decide to work at the New American Legal Clinic?
It was time for me to get back to my social justice roots. With the current political climate and anti-immigration rhetoric, I felt I was sitting on the sidelines and needed to get back to helping people. I also loved the idea of working in a law school clinic because I could practice law and work with the students.
Helping people seems to be a passion for you. How will you apply it to this job?
I will primarily handle the removal defense cases. My job is to help my clients stay in the country because they’re facing horrible conditions in their home countries. I’ll also represent clients who are applying for citizenship.
What’s going to be the most rewarding part of your job?
Keeping families together and giving my clients a chance to live a life in the US without fear.
Why is the NALC program so important in today’s political climate?
NALC provides legal representation to members of our community who may not otherwise have access to it. Immigration is an incredibly complex area of the law and representing oneself in immigration court is a daunting task. Legal representation is all the more important in today’s political climate because immigration is such a contested issue and policies are being changed or challenged so often it can be hard to keep up.
How does it feel knowing your work impacts your community in such a big way?
It feels very important and much needed. The removal defense cases are very emotional and there is a lot at stake. Just knowing that my clients will not be alone in the fight to stay in the US is rewarding and makes me happy to be working at NALC.
What are some of your day-to-day responsibilities now and going forward?
It varies. There are days I’m at the USCIS office attending naturalization interviews with my clients. Other days I am in the office meeting with clients, preparing applications and pleadings or researching. I will also be attending hearings at San Francisco Immigration Court.
When you’re not helping your clients, what are some of your hobbies?
I love just hanging out with my dogs while I listen to podcasts and audiobooks. I also enjoy going on long walks to relax and clear my head. I recently signed up for Spanish classes because a majority of my clients’ primary language is Spanish.
Why do you think the NALC program is such a great experience for law students?
I participated in an immigration clinic when I went to law school, and I think it’s a wonderful way to prepare students for the practice of law. In the clinic students will have the opportunity to work on cases with real stakes that can directly impact the lives of our clients and their families. This is great clinic to get hands-on experience before their first job.
